Green Street Academy is an innovative public middle-high school in west Baltimore, inspiring scholars with sustainability and preparing them for college and career through project-based learning. After utilizing space at North Bend Elementary School for a few years, the need became apparent for a permanent home with room to expand. Southway was chosen by the development team very early in the process to assist with feasibility, budgeting, and programming. Our preconstruction team provided analyses of two facilities. A former city high school building occupied by a private owner was ultimately selected.
The new building is roughly 145,000 square feet and can provide for 875 students. The space includes breakout rooms with white board walls, and 50,000 square feet of STEM learning space like science labs and technology areas. The renovation was constructed as a joint venture with Southway Builders and MCN Build. The renovation included an extensive portion of the existing building with most of the upper floor being reserved for future expansion. The building continues use as a worship facility by Kingdom Life Church. The renovation was sensitive to the owner’s tight budget constraints and utilizes much of the existing former school layout.
