5 Questions With: Matt Bolyard, Senior Vice President – Southeast

In this interview, we sit down with Senior Vice President – Southeast, Matt Bolyard, to learn more about his background, career journey, and his thoughts on leading the company’s exciting expansion into North Carolina.

Where did your construction and Southway career start?
My construction career started at a very young age, tagging along with my father who was a union carpenter, who eventually became a superintendent, in Baltimore. I was also fortunate enough to join him on weekends doing side jobs as his apprentice on various construction projects, ranging from simple roof repairs and deck builds to more complex historic renovation work. Despite an early interest in pursuing a career in aerospace engineering, I ultimately returned to my construction roots and joined Southway, where I found my home due to the company’s shared purpose and mission-driven approach to stakeholder service.

How long have you been with Southway and what has your experience been like so far?
I have been with Southway for 17 years this January, and my experience with the company has been transformative, both figuratively and literally. Nearly every significant milestone in my life, from completing my MBA to getting married, buying my first home, and having children, has been accomplished in partnership with Southway. Our shared purpose and commitment to maximizing potential has allowed me to not only achieve my own goals but also to help others do the same. It is a true privilege to be a part of the Southway family and to be surrounded by individuals who share a passion for helping others succeed.

What does a typical day look like for you in your current role?
In my new role leading the expansion of Southway Builders into North Carolina, few days are alike. On most days, I wear many different hats related to the expansion effort. This includes managing the operational aspects of our first project in Chapel Hill, conducting business development activities to establish a presence in the southeast region, and collaborating with our pre-construction team to effectively lead and oversee turnkey pre-development work for stakeholders. Additionally, I work closely with our human resources staff in recruitment, retention, and training of new and existing team members in the North Carolina offices. With all of this also comes consistent high-level strategic planning in pursuit of our geographic expansion pillar of our 2028 Vision.

What excites you most about the Southeast expansion?
I am excited about the Southeast expansion for several reasons. One major reason is the opportunity to live our company’s Purpose, which is to serve others so that they may reach their maximum potential. This includes creating opportunities for our internal Southway team members, but I am equally, if not more, excited by the opportunity to serve others in new communities beyond our current borders and to expand Southway’s impact into new communities. By expanding into these new areas, we not only provide jobs and economic development, but we also bring our values and mission to more people, allowing us to make an even greater impact in the lives of those we serve.

What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, family is my biggest priority. I have three amazing kids, two boys, and one girl, and we just welcomed a new puppy into our home. Coaching sports teams also takes up a lot of my time, as I coach two soccer teams, two basketball teams, as well as three baseball/softball teams. I’m also involved in our community and serve on four volunteer boards. Our family also actively participates in our church parish, St. Joseph’s Fullerton. It is incredibly challenging but equally rewarding. When I’m not coaching sports, I can be found working collaboratively each year with our kids to innovate and develop an incredible Halloween production as we transform our home into an annual themed walk-thru haunted house each Halloween.  While we “Griswold” all holidays, Halloween is our “over-the-top” holiday for getting into the holiday spirit as a family.
